Mount Goldie February 20th 2010
Sometimes it’s good to be late! Last year I overslept for the Kanikula Glacier ride. I was about 45 minutes behind and while trying to locate the group I took a little detour on a trail leading to some higher ground overlooking the Kanikula in the hopes of finding the gang. What I discovered (completely by accident) is the route to the snowy bowls of Mt Goldie…a mountain riding paradise. (The young kids call it “Dreamland”). For you map-hounds Mt Goldie crowns the ridge that divides the Tokositna and Kanikula glaciers. This is an ADVANCED ride. I’m not going to tell what kind of machine to ride BUT this type of riding is best suited for purpose-built, long tracked mountain sleds, and for riders with the strength and stamina to make the trip. Leaving the river bottom the trail up the ridge is steep and narrow in spots. If you cannot ride standing up, going uphill for a solid mile you probably should stay down low and explore the glacier otherwise you’ll be stuck constantly. Once the main ridge is gained the trail flattens out a bit but there is still deep snow and some side-hilling to deal with. REQUIREMENTS for this ride are EXPERIENCE and GEAR which means you are an experienced, proficient mountain rider who can side-hill, climb, and powder-turn; plus you have a Beacon, Shovel and Probe. Make sure you bring water and a lunch, spare oil, enough fuel, and whatever else you and your machine eats. Saturday-- 10:00 am-Meet up at the MP131 parking area on the Parks Hwy for pre-departure/safety meeting 10:30 am-Depart along the North Loop Trail to the Tokositna River then follow the river to the foot of the Tokositna Glacier and the Mt Goldie Trail. The ride in should take about 1.5 hours. 3:30 pm-Depart riding area and return to vehicles (or whenever people or their machines run out of gas). If there is a lot of interest from folks who’d like to ride the river bottom and explore the Tokositna/Kanikula valleys then we can certainly split up and have two rides.
