The Herning Trail is a transportation corridor valuable to the inhabitants of Knik, Big Lake, Houston, Willow and Hatchers Pass. The trail originally established in 1913 by mining speculators and fur trappers, is significant to the transportation of goods and services among these communities even today. Currenly the trail is need of repair in sections as well as clearing overgrowth. The Planning Commission voted recently and unanimously passed this onto the Assembly for continued preservation.
Anchorage Snowmobile Club hosted a ride along a portion of this trail in 2011 that connects Houston to Hatchers Pass. We realize the value and significance of this transportation corridor and fully support the preservation and maintenance for the Orville G. Herning Trail.
